St. Georges, Bermuda
This unspoiled town overlooking St. Georges Harbor was Bermuda's first Capital and remains its most fascinating sightseeing area. The town is steeped in period charm as befits a place that was Britain's second settlement in the New World. Many of its original twisting alleyways and colonial-era buildings remain intact, and several centuries-old structures have been preserved and set aside as museums.
Attractions
To really appreciate St. George's history and charm, you should take a walking tour of the town. Start on Ordinance Island and make your way across the short bridge to King's Square. You'll see the Town Hall and reproductions of the stocks and pillories that were used in colonial days. From there, view Somers Gardens and explore the cobbled streets of the rest of the town.
Activities
- Shop for antiques, collectibles, paintings and Bermuda-made crafts at the Bridge House, once the home to Bermuda's governors.
- Take a walk on Windsor Beach. Just down the shoreline from the most exclusive homes in Bermuda, this beach is the only place in Bermuda to go surfing.
- Tour the Old State House, constructed in 1620, and now rented to the Masonic Lodge for the price of one peppercorn each year.
- Explore Gates Fort. Dating from 1609, the fort was built by one of the original settlers on the shipwrecked Sea Venture.
Shopping
Bermudian products are available at great prices. These products, exclusive to Bermuda, include cedar-wood gifts, commemorative coins, miniature ceramic cottages, handbags with cedar and mahogany handles, hand-crafted gold jewelry, polished shark's teeth mounted in 14-karat gold and the famous Bermuda shorts.
Currency
The Bermuda dollar (BMD) is the official currency. It is on par with the U.S. dollar. U.S. dollars, traveler's checks and credit cards are widely accepted.
