Rabaul
Rabaul, the capital of New Britain Island in the Bismark Archipelago, is the largest of Papua New Guinea's islands. Rabaul, the former provincial capital, is located in the Gazelle Peninsula on the southern side. Covered by tropical rain forests and surrounded by a colorful coral reef, Rabaul is also sprinkled with World War II relics.
Activities
- Rabaul Volcanological Observatory. Tavurvur volcano continues to huff and puff as the region's seismic activity is measured even more conscientiously than ever.
- Visit Rabaul Airport Wreckage, this old airport was buried under lava. Just beyond the former runway, see the wreckage of old Japanese planes still scattered amongst the palm trees.
- Kokopo War and Cultural Museum houses a collection of historical objects, World War II relics and photographs.
